A common adage of our time states that beauty is power and beauty is a weapon. Just like any other weapon, beauty can be used to one’s advantage. But just like all good things, there is a common belief that beauty doesn’t come easy. However, at Avané clinic, we are here to offer consolation for those who seek beauty, bringing you the best of services to transform your life. One of these is through the use of chemical peels. A chemical peel is a skin rejuvenation treatment used to restore beauty to the skin, making you look and feel younger and more beautiful. Avané clinic helps you redefine your power by granting you your beauty, at a friendly cost and by use of a safe and effective treatment procedure.

Chemical peels are also known as chemexfoliations or derma peelings. A chemical peel is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure, where chemicals are applied to the skin, causing it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. It uses an acid solution to scurf the skin. The acid removes a uniform amount of damaged skin cells across the treatment area where it was applied on. The procedure removes old, mangled skin, and after peeling off, newer, healthier and more youthful skin appears with fewer wrinkles and lines.  After exfoliation the procedure allows the skin to heal with minimal scarring and colour changes. The procedure is not limited only to the face but also used on the neck and hands. It has undergone clinical tests and is FDA-approved for the treatment of wrinkles ad other skin-related defects.

Dermatologists and medical doctors alike use chemical peels in the treatment of:

Precautions.

One key element about chemical peels is that one needs to exercise great care before and after the procedure. This is important to minimize the risk of altercation and increase effectiveness. During consultations, our able doctors give our clients certain precautionary measures to follow, before and post the procedure, depending on their type of peel and skin type. These include:

  • Avoid tanning and direct sun exposure for two weeks before each treatment.
  • Apply topical products (such as hydroquinone) as instructed before treatment to prepare your skin.
  • Don’t use any products containing retinoids (such as tretinoin) one to two weeks before treatment, unless your physician tells you differently.
  • If you have been prescribed oral antibiotics or oral antiviral medicine, start taking it at least 24 hours before your chemical peel.
  • Peel areas must be free of any open sores, lesions or skin infections.

Types of peels and Procedures.

At the clinic, we perform the procedure on an outpatient basis. There are three types of peels, each with different acid solutions and varying procedures. In all three types, however, the face is cleaned and protective gauze or goggles are used to cover the eyes. The area under treatment is also restricted to keep the acid within it. Typical anaesthesia is used to numb the skin. With superficial peel, the doctor uses a cotton ball or a brush to apply salicylic acid on the skin, which causes the skin to whiten. One may feel a slight stinging sensation. Afterwards, the doctor cleans off the skin with water and a neutralizing solution is applied.

For moderate peel, a cotton ball or brush is used to apply trichloroacetic acid and the skin begins to whiten and a stinging sensation is also felt. After some time, the doctor smears a cool compress on the skin and waits for about 20 minutes. No neutralizing solution is needed. The last type of peel is deep peel. Deep peel however is more drastic as one is given intravenous (IV) fluids and the heart rate is monitored as a precaution. The doctor applies phenol acid and the skin turns white. The procedure is done at intervals of 15 minutes for about 90 minutes. This is done to reduce the exposure time to phenol acid.

Chemical peels are extremely effective and the results are amazing. The skin texture improves and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Results are seen after a period of about 1-2 weeks for mild and moderate peels and up to 3 weeks for deep peels. It is neither permanent nor a one-time treatment as one needs to schedule subsequent visits of about 3-5 sessions, within 2-5 weeks after the previous treatment. Deep peels are intense and may require one to take extra precautions to facilitate healing. This may include, taking a leave from work to recuperate at home, taking antiviral medications for about 2 weeks after treatment, applying specified moisturizer and ointment creams, not using make-up for up to 14 days and avoiding overexposure to sunlight for about 3-6 months after treatment.

Side effects.

Most aesthetical procedures have associated side effects, and chemical peels are no different. They are linked with side effects such as redness, scarring, drying of the skin, swelling, stinging and burning. These side effects are minor and temporary. They can easily be managed by using antibiotics or painkillers that the medic will recommend should the need arise. However, they also lead to hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, and permanent scarring, while pekoe with herpes simplex risk getting infections. Use of phenol acid used in deep peeling may harm the liver, heart and kidney if not well administered. To avoid these, it is advisable to seek professionals to conduct the procedures, and this is exactly what we have at Avane clinic.

Benefits

The benefits of chemical peels are the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines. Exfoliation of damaged skin ensures that acne and acne scars are a thing of the past, and minimizes the pores to be smaller.
