What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpled skin that forms on the thighs and buttocks. It is also called orange peel skin. It is a harmless condition and is prevalent in women. Cellulite is caused by fat cells. Our skin is tethered to underlying muscles through fibrous connective tissues. Accumulation of fat cells under the skin interferes with the fibrous connections. Several fat cells join up, and eventually, they start to push the skin upwards. This causes a ripple-like effect on the skin, with some hollow areas and other risen ones. This is called cellulite

What causes cellulite?

The actual cause of cellulite is not known. However, it can be attributed to several conditions that are believed to be factors that lead to cellulite. One of these factors is unhealthy lifestyles. Unhealthy living conditions such as eating too much junk food and not exercising are causes of cellulite. Furthermore, hormonal factor plays a huge role in cellulite development. Additionally, genetics determine the skin structure, skin texture, and body type of an individual. Weight and muscle tone are also factors that cause cellulite.

How does VelaShape work?

Unlike other cellulite treatments that utilize just one modality in cellulite treatment, VelaShape makes use of four technologies. These are infrared light, bipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy, mechanical massage, and gentle suction. The gentle suction helps bring the skin closer to the energy source inside the handheld device used by the doctor. The massage helps to relax and stretch the stiff fibrous band under the skin. At the same time, the infrared and RF energies heat the skin, tightening tissues and shrinking the fat cells. In some cases, the fat cells might even die.

VelaShape works externally on the skin, using a range of heat and massage techniques. The heat produced by the VelaShape machine helps reduce skin laxity. This is done via the tightening of the underlying dermal collagen fibres. The procedure further stimulates the formation and regeneration of collagen and elastin. It also helps in enhancing firmness and elasticity over time. VelaShape therapy is paired with RF micro-needling for more effectiveness and better results. It however requires repeat sessions to increase effectiveness.

Who is a good candidate for VelaShape?

The best candidates for VelaShape are people who are at a healthy weight, with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30, and mild to moderate cellulite. If your skin has some dimpling or an “orange peel” look when you’re standing up, then you are also at an added advantage. Doctors do not recommend VelaShape therapy for pregnant and lactating women. We also don’t recommend it for individuals with an implanted automatic defibrillator, pacemaker, or other electronic device. Patients using blood thinning drugs should cease using them for about 5 days before the treatment,

What happens during VelaShape treatment?

During treatment, the patient lies down on a table, while the doctor places a handheld VelaShape machine against the patient’s skin. Through pulsed vacuum technology, suction against the skin, and massage rollers, cellulite-causing fat cells are targeted. Then, infrared light and radiofrequency penetrate the fat cells, perforate the membranes, and cause the fat cells to release their fatty acids into the body and shrink.

The patient feels a gentle suctioning as the device pulls the fatty layers under the skin towards it. This helps maximize exposure to infrared light and RF energy. One also feels a warm sensation as the devices cause deep heating of the connective tissues. This helps stimulate collagen and elasticin formation. It further helps tighten the skin and make it firmer. The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes. One may feel the skin as being warm, and it may be pink. The skin may also form some minor swellings and become sensitive. This however is temporary.

Expected results.

As mentioned earlier, the skin in the treated area may feel warm when touched. It may also be pink in colour and a little bit sensitive. VelaShape has no downtime, and you can go back to your day-to-day activities. It is not a one-time procedure, but it requires several subsequent treatment sessions. These sessions should be held between 1 week to 3 months apart. Our doctors will help you find an effective and opportune schedule for you.

Is VelaShape permanent?

It is important to note that VelaShape is a technique to offer an improvement on cellulite. VelaShape does not provide a cure for it. It shrinks the fat cells but does not destroy them completely. This means that VelaShape treatment is not permanent. It might help one achieve a cellulite-free body for a while. One however has to maintain the look. Our doctors combine VelaShape treatment with other measures such as a healthy diet, exercise, and other healthy living measures.

Treatment areas.

Cellulite can form on any part of the skin. They are however common on the thighs, buttocks, flanks, abdomen, neck, and upper arm. The location varies from one person to another.
