One paradox of life is the relationship between beauty and age. We are born beautiful in our unique ways and as we grow, our features develop and our beauty increases. Through teenage and youth, more changes appear and we are at the peak of our development, and the climax of our beauty. After a certain age, however, things start going downhill, and we deteriorate, each of us in our nonunique ways. We get loose skins, wrinkles and lines all over our face, in what is usually an unwelcome occurrence. We crave our youthfulness back. The good news is that at Avané clinic, Nairobi, we can make this wish come true. Through our fillers treatment, we can help eradicate signs of ageing on your skin.
Fillers are also called dermal fillers. They are gel-like substances that are injected underneath the skin, to change its appearance. Fillers are nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures. They are used to restore lost volume, smoothen lines, enhance shallow facial contours and soften creases or wrinkles. Fillers are also used to plump thin lips, remove shadows on lower lids and improve the appearance of recessed scars. Furthermore, we use fillers for treatment of nasolabial folds cheek fillers, correction of frown lines, deep forehead lines as well as temple dips, and treatment of acne pits and scaring. This aims to restore ageing skin to its glory days and leave you feeling younger and much more confident about your skin. Fillers have undergone clinical tests and are approved by the FDA for clinical use in cosmetic and aesthetic procedures.
How fillers work.
Part of the skin dermal layer consists of collagen. There are protein fibres that hold the skin together, enhancing its tightness and fullness. As we age, the body produces less and less collagen, which leads to the skin having a lower grip on the underlying tissues. It also leads to a significant reduction in volume. By the age of 70, it is estimated that one might have lost about 80% of the body volume. The action of gravity pulls down the weakened skin and this leads to sagging. Fillers are used to “bridge “the loss in volume. They make the skin appear full and plump, and enhance its youthfulness. Fillers are a saving grace for people who would like rehabilitation against their ageing skin, without undergoing surgical procedures or face lifts. They are also cheaper and more efficient than surgery or facelifts.

There are several types of dermal fillers. They are classified based on the product they contain.
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers- This is a soft, gel-like product that contains hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the body and is used to maintain skin hydration and keep it plump. It is infused with lidocaine as an anaesthetic compound.
- Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) fillers- They contain a synthetic, non-toxic material, which takes the form of a micro-sphere that remains underneath the skin for continued support and structuring. It also contains collagen which helps in structuring and enhancing the firmness of the skin
- Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA) fillers- This is a gel-like product that contains Calcium Hydroxyapatite, which helps stimulate natural collagen production. It is typically used to treat wrinkles and deep lines on the skin.
- Polylactic acid fillers- They contain polylactic acid which is a synthetic, biodegradable and non-toxic product that stimulates the production of the body’s collagen. It works best with the lower face, thus it is primarily used in plumping thin lips or smoothening smile lines.
We conduct filler treatment on an outpatient basis. It is easily done at the doctor’s office. During the procedure, the area under treatment is assessed and cleansed while mapping is done to identify the specific spots and marking is done. Antibacterial agents are used to clean out the spots and a numbing cream is applied to the area to reduce pain or discomfort and ensure the procedure is tolerable. Fillers are then carefully injected into the spots using injections, followed by massaging and evaluation of the results repeatedly. Some filler products used are imbued with an anaesthetic compound such as lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during the treatment. The whole process may take about 30 minutes to one 1 hour, based on the size of the area under treatment.
Before and After.
Side effects
The procedure has minimal side effects. These are swelling, bleeding, redness, itching or rashes, scarring, headaches, bruising, pain after treatment and possible numbness. One may notice visible clumping of the filler material and possible allergic reactions to ingredients used to make fillers. Discolouration or change in skin pigment leading to hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may betide. In some rare cases, blurred vision or blindness may also arise. Infections may also occur on the treated area, causing necrosis, which is the death of the infected part. Necrosis is however extremely rare. We advise that one seeks medical help from our doctors should they notice bleeding or persistent pain. Fever or signs of infection on the treated area as well as signs of an allergic reaction after treatment also warrant contacting your doctor for resolution.
